Thankful Author 2019- Lucy Kubash

In November, my local RWA chapter, Mid-Michigan RWA, holds a holiday party in place of a monthly program. It’s always a fun time. We play silly games, exchange small gifts and just have a fun time with lots of laughs and camaraderie. During this month’s get-together, I realized what, as a writer. I am most thankful for, and that is the friendship of other writers. I am so fortunate to count among my friends some very talented and gracious authors.

When I first started writing many years ago, I didn’t know any other writers. Then I read in our newspaper about a group of writers who were going to meet at the YWCA. I decided to put on my hat of courage and go introduce myself. In doing so, I discovered the mom of one of my daughter’s classmates was also a writer. We connected and years later, with our kids all grown, we’re still the best of friends. Not long after, we discovered several other local authors and we formed our own little lunch/support group. The following year, we discovered Romance Writers of America and the new chapter that was just getting started in mid-Michigan. I joined and have been a member of both ever since.

Writing is a lonely endeavor. We spend many hours sitting at our computers, stuck in our own minds, with only our imaginary folks for company. While we enjoy the process (we must, or why would we keep doing it?), it’s a good thing to get out every now and then and spend time with people who understand us. Our families and other friends may be supportive, but there is nothing like spending some time with other writers. Whether it is an online group, a professional writers’ organization, or just a casual lunch bunch, hanging out with those who “get” what drives us helps fill the well and sometimes even contributes to a writer’s mental health.

I’m very fortunate to have many writing friends, and I value them highly. I know I’d still be writing even without them, but knowing I can connect with someone who understands the highs and lows of a writer’s life gives me added determination to carry on. If you find writing friends such as these hold them close. They are gold.

My newest release is Will o’ the Wisp, a contemporary romantic suspense, from The Wild Rose Press. Here is a blurb:

In spite of a broken heart, Allison Delaney carved out a life for herself and her young daughter on her grandparents' farm. Her child and the horses she rescues are all that matter. Then a sudden threat to their safety puts her back in touch with Shane McBride, the man she never thought to see again.

Returning to the small town of Silver Creek brings back a lot of memories for Shane, ones he treasures haunted by the ones that made him leave, but this time he is determined to stay and make things right.

Trusting Shane may be her only choice, but now Allison fears not only the threat against her farm but the risk of losing her heart again.

Excerpt:

There had never been any doubt in his mind being with Allison was the best thing that had ever happened to him. There was no doubt now. He slid his hands through her hair, framed her face, and tipped it up to meet his.

Kissing her had come as naturally to him as breathing. It still did. Her mouth tasted the same, too, sweet like the wild honey from the bees in Pop’s orchard. Intoxicating as summer wine and as irresistible as a soft pink blossom. He groaned softly and took everything her kiss had to offer.
