Thankful Author 2018- Cathrine Goldstein

I am thankful for so many things in my life: family, friends, health, and home. But this year, I am most grateful for memories—those we’ve made, and those we’re making.

Holidays mean traditions for us, and my girls look forward to our Christmas Eve bike ride almost as much as they look forward to Santa. (Wait until they find out this year’s ride will include a puppy!) It’s the most magical day of the year, and as we pedal our bikes the world seems at peace for the moment, and the chilly air feels charged with possibility.

My girls are still young and of course they love gifts, but I’m thrilled that the holiday season isn’t only about a list for Santa, it’s about all those things we do together as a family. Every year the holiday list of “What we want to do” is created long before the letters to Santa. Baking cookies with Grandma; visiting the holiday bazaar where they do all their holiday shopping; a horse and carriage ride through the botanical gardens; and I’m proud to say my oldest has started her own giving tree charity, where she collects toys for our local children’s hospital, and we deliver them together as a family. (Last year she collected over three hundred gifts!)

This year has had its ups and downs for our family with regard to grandparents, the oldest members of our extended family. I am eternally grateful for memories that will always keep them near.

The gifts are sometimes forgotten, but memories really do last forever.

The New York Artists Series—Book 1 : Summer of Irreverence-The Rock Star
Summer of Irreverence-The Rock Star,
Excerpt

“How did you go through life with that name…?” Malcolm’s eyes flashed with happiness. “I mean, if I wrote it, people would crucify me. What were your parents thinking?”
Summer froze. Suddenly the walls began closing in on her.
“I mean, do they love you at all?” Malcolm chuckled.
Summer’s feet refused to move, and her arms lay limp at her side
“Summer?” Malcolm’s smile faded. “Sum?”
The sound of her nickname spoken by Malcolm did her in. She desperately fought the mounting tears.
Malcolm stared at her. “It’s not your name you’re upset about, is it?”
Summer clenched her jaw and shook her head.
“I’m sorry.” His voice was low and modulated.
She nodded, looking at Malcolm, and wanting, for the first time ever, to have someone make it all okay. To have him make it all okay.
Malcolm grew quiet. They stood there for whole minutes.
“I’m sorry if I touched on a sore subject. Really.”
Summer stared at him—this man who had everything except the answer she needed. How could he be so closed off? How could he care so little about the pain of another living creature?
He stepped forward then, as if reading her mind. He took her hand gently, and leaned over, speaking quietly into her ear. “It’s not that I don’t care.”
Those few words found a place deep in Summer’s soul.
Malcolm stood up tall, and Summer’s eyes followed him. He reached out and stroked her cheek as he spoke. “But I’ve got nothing more to give than today.”

  1. Lovely post, Catherine. In my household making memories is the equivalent of gathering blackmail intel :) At the moment both of my teens are wading into the dating world. I swear, it's like I'm living in a YA book!
