Thankful Author - Liz Flaherty

Gratitude is a huge umbrella, isn’t it? Polka dotted, maybe, or flowered, or even somber black if it offers you warmth or safety or joy or even...well, dryness. But it’s hard to pick out just one thing simply because there is so much to be thankful for.
So today I’m grateful for second chances. It’s still a big subject. A friend of mine even used the words in a book title (The Summer of Second Chances, Nan Reinhardt). Even though I’m the worst plotter on the planet, second chances usually finagle their way into the plots of my books, too.
Especially the ones where the protagonists are “of a certain age,” when midlife or later throws them a whopping big curve and they think beyond all doubt that It Is Over. They are destined to sit in rocking chairs on the porch and watch the rest of life pass them by.
Oh, no. No, they’re not. They are destined to feel their ways into new places, to open their hearts and their minds to new ideas and friends and...there goes that big umbrella again. They are limited only by their imaginations and the inexorable stiffening of their joints. J
I am privileged to be one of the writers of A Heartwarming Christmas. My story, The Gingerbread Heart, is about Cass and Eli. They are people in their fifties who have found themselves in the batter’s box when the curve ball cut loose. It is because of them—and how they swung the bat—that I’m thankful for second chances.

Retired from the post office, Liz Flaherty spends non-writing time sewing, quilting, and doing whatever else she wants to. She and Duane live in the old farmhouse in North Central Indiana they moved to in 1977. They’ve talked about moving, but really…30-some years’ worth of stuff? It’s not happening!
She’d love to hear from you at lizkflaherty@gmail.com or please come and see her at:

  5. Lovely post, Liz. I'm thinking about the color of my umbrella--and the fact you've lived in the same place for 30 years during which time I've moved 3 times, including one transatlantic...

    1. It's funny, how I always WANTED to live in different places, and would still move if life called for it, there's no denying how big a place in my heart is held by our home. I hope your umbrella's a lovely one!
