Thankful Author 2018- Maureen Bonatch

My favorite place to be is at home taking joy out of the small pleasures in life. I’m a bit of an introvert despite having to go out in the world for the day job. As an author, and a freelance healthcare writer, preferring not to go much further than my backyard could limit my opportunities, which is one reason I’m thankful for the Internet.

I know, the Internet gets a bad rap most of the time. However, without it I would not have gotten where I am today in my writing career. I’ve met so many other fabulous authors and writers that I consider friends- even though we’ve never met. I never realized a career as a healthcare freelance writer was possible, if not for the Internet. Even then, I wouldn’t have believed I could achieve either without the encouragement from my cyber -community.

A few minutes on social media can make a difference in my day. I’m well aware of the potential to get sucked in to negativity and mindless scrolling, so I limit my time online if I’m not working. But if I’m feeling stressed, there’s nothing like a cute animal video, or helping an author celebrate a new release, sharing daily life with my readers, or appreciating the few seconds someone has taken to comment.

One of my sisters has lived out of state for many years. She moved before email and social media became popular, so our opportunities for conversations and sharing our lives was infrequent. Without this resource, I wouldn’t be able to see pictures of her and her family and feel as if I was part of her every day, and our connection wouldn’t be the same.

Sure, there are many negative things surrounding the Internet, but when I focus on the positive benefits and opportunities it provides, it is something I’m thankful for.

NOT A CHANCE

The Enchantlings Series, Volume 2
Maureen L. Bonatch
A paranormal romance from The Wild Rose Press

Release Date: 10-31-2018

Cover Artist: Debbie Taylor, DCA Graphics

Hope just wants to be normal—too bad that will never happen.

Blurb

The last thing Hope Hallows wants is to become the latest headline. Living in a town that likes secrets, she prefers to keep hers hidden. Avoiding a nosy reporter’s questions about her ability to infuse euphoria or despair with a single touch, and those who crave this bliss, is nothing new. But having her brother’s annoying girlfriend, Berta, go missing is—especially when it makes Hope suspect number one.

As a triplet, her resemblance to her beloved dead sister causes her family to grieve even more, and her escalating supernatural skills makes Griffith, her half-human-half-Oppressor boyfriend, wary. He wants to put his unsavory past behind him—this could include Hope—since her abilities remind him of the Underworld.

In her desperate search to find Berta, she stumbles across a tunnel. Phantom voices within whisper that evil has been waiting for a new leader—and isn't she lucky, they've chosen Hope.

Excerpt

“I swear you have a death wish. Are you looking for any excuse to use your abilities again?”

I started at the ferocity in his remark and straightened in defense. He was supposed to be my ally, but I should’ve anticipated his reaction. “I had no choice.”

“Only because you chose to take her in the woods in the first place.” The tiny haze of lights ignited around him as his frustration built.

I pushed my hands in my pockets to prevent from reaching for him for my own selfish comfort. He had to understand. Griffith was the only one who understood me. He was my rock in this ever-changing town. “I had to help look for Berta. There isn’t a choice in everything. I couldn’t let Chance go alone. Yes, I went because it was my idea in the first place, but also because he’s my brother. It’s not safe for him.”

His gaze locked with mine. “You didn’t worry about yourself? Or consider how much worry you’ve caused me? Damn it Hope, you, of all people, should realize what lurks undercover in the daylight has little fear at night and outside of town.”

Griffith always saw right through my petty motives. The trait was what I loved and hated about him.

  4. Thank you for the reminder of the positive aspects of online connections. I, too, am an introvert and my writing journey would have been over before it started had it not been for the digital revolution. Happy Thanksgiving to you Maureen. Your excerpt is intriguing!

  5. Wonderful post, Maureen! My sister encouraged me to join facebook many years ago after I complained that I never saw any of their family photos. I'm so grateful she did and do limit my time. As an author, these online tools are a great resource (and bring humor) for my own career. Wishing you all the best with your new release!

  6. I love the Internet as well. I often wonder how we used toys settle disputes before the advent of the on line world. You can look up any arcane fact now and find the answers. Incredible. Glad you and your sister are now connected. Happy Thanksgiving.

  9. Maureen, I have a love/hate relationship with the internet, too. I love it, but my kids hate that I'm on it all the time. LOL. Happy Thanksgiving. May we all find peace without electronics for one day.
