Charm Me – A Candy Hearts Romance

Summer Dawn Riley’s an extraordinary elemental witch whose troubled past haunts her. She’s created a calm life for herself teaching yoga and keeping people at a distance. Her life takes a one eighty degree turn when she enrolls in a women’s weapons class and meets ruggedly handsome Devlin Sawyer.

Devlin, a former Navy Seal, has sworn off women after two long-term failed relationships, but there is no denying his attraction to Summer. She intrigues him like no other woman ever has. Despite her attempts to ignore him, Summer is drawn to Devlin. His magic signature is strong, but he’s no warlock. Will Valentine’s Day magic find them a future together?

To start off the New Year, on Angela’s Blog Spot featuring Candy Heart Romances. Today,  Tena Stetler and Summer Dawn Riley, heroine from Tena’s Valentine Story, Charm Me, stopped by for a visit. We'll start with Summer.

Where are you from and who’s that with you? “I was born and raised in a small town on the eastern seaboard.  I lived there with my parents and a brother until a tragic event took place. I took up Yoga to center myself and leave the magic behind.” Summer glanced at the cream chow standing beside her. “This is Piper, she goes everywhere with me, I hope you don’t mind.”

No, not at all. Tell us a bit about Charm Me. “Devlin, who just wouldn’t take no for an answer, showed up uninvited at my yoga studio Earthbound Yoga. But he did bring with him my favorite Latte.  The steaming hot beverage on a cold, snowy morning was his saving grace.” Summer laughed. “Here’s my favorite excerpt from the book.”

Getting to her feet, she brushed the dust from her black yoga pants, tugged at the bottom of her bright orange tunic, and flipped the light switch on. A soft glow of florescent lighting flooded the large room, soothing Summer’s nerves. Guess she would never be the same carefree individual she was before the incident. Oh, shake it off. You’re safe and it’s time to get on with life. “Come on Pip, let’s get this place open.”

A massive stone fireplace towered in the corner.  She picked up an arm full of wood and flung it in the general direction. Logs landed in the fire pit and neatly arranged themselves in a tepee shape. With a magic flick of her finger toward the hearth, flames raced up the aspen logs. “That’s better.”

She raised her arms, about to send the yoga mats back to their proper place when the heavy wooden front door creaked open. Piper rushed toward the door, teeth bared and a growl rumbled in her throat. Summer whirled around and yelped as Devlin ambled into the room, black hair tousled and glistening with melting snowflakes. His nonchalance at the dog’s approach surprised her as he slowed to a stop. Piper sniffed around him, backed up a few inches, then stood at alert in front of Devlin.

“You scared the bejeebers out of me.” Summer held her hand to her chest as her heart thundered.
“What are you doing here?”
“Call your guard dog off and I’ll tell you.” The corners of Devlin’s mouth curved up into a smile, a faint light twinkled in the depths of his dark eyes.
“Piper, leave it…come.” The dog gave Devlin a last sideways glance, trotted back to Summer and sat at her side.

What did you think the first time you saw Devlin Sawyer? “My first thought was my God what a hunk.  The other thoughts are X rated.  I don’t normally react like that so I was taken back and stumbled all over myself.  My face was red nearly the entire visit. Originally, I’d seen an ad for a women’s gun class in the paper, that’s why I was there. Devlin was behind the counter, I had no idea he was the owner, until I signed up and left, then read his business card in my SUV.”

Makes sense. And your second thought?  “When he assisted in the women’s gun class, it was a big class, his professional persona, was confident, helpful and patient. I liked that too. Although my leaning against him when he showed me how to hold and aim the weapon caused a…um… rise he didn’t hide very well, if you know what I mean.” Summer snickered, she put her hands to her face as the color rose in her cheeks.  “He could be dangerous to my commitment to remain relationship free.”

Did you feel it was love at first sight? “Not exactly, I was trying to keep a low profile in the new town, but I just couldn’t -- where Devlin was concerned. He made me feel at ease, like I could trust him from the get go.”

What do you like most about Devlin? “His confidence and honesty. I also liked the way he related to Piper, my companion, guard dog.  As you can see she goes everywhere with me and he accepted that without question. He is a darn fine cook also.

How would you describe him? “Devlin makes me laugh. He is protective to a fault of the ones he cares about. Devlin has a soft side under that tough exterior. Though he’d never admit it. And he loves his country, very patriotic.”

How would Devlin describe you? “Well… lets ask him.  He just walked in the door.”  Summer’s eyes light up as Devlin crosses to her, leans over slides his arm around her waist, pulls her close, brushing his lips over hers affectionately, lingers only a moment and sits beside her. The large chow resting at her feet acknowledges him with a tail wag.

“Ask me what?” Devlin stops to scratch Piper behind the ear and glances from the interviewer to Summer.”

The interviewer repeats. “How would you describe Summer?”

“Determined, self-reliant with a great sense of humor. And a terrible liar.”

As long as you are here, Devlin? What made you retire from the SEAL’s? Why the gun club?  I loved the SEAL’s, but after the death of my mother, not being available for my family when they need me, especially my dad, wasn’t an option. I was out of country with the SEAL’s on assignment a lot. It was a driving force in my retirement. The programs I set up at the Moon Ridge Gun Club benefit the community, the military and law enforcement.

What is your biggest fear Summer? “Letting my magic control me, rather than me control the magic.”

How do you relax, Devlin? “I enjoy spending time at my cabin in Divide, the quiet and nature sooth my inter beast, so as to speak.”

Summer? She stared at Devlin, brows raised, then diverted her attention back to the interviewer. “Curled up with a good book, in front of a crackling fire with Piper at my feet.”

What is the best piece of advice you ever received, Summer? “To be myself. I spent years trying to be someone I wasn’t. So that piece of advice change my life.” She looked to Devlin who winked at her.

Terrific advice. Thanks, Summer… Devlin.

“Thank you, it was nice meeting you. We have to run.”

Tena, tell us a little about yourself.

I write paranormal romance, some cozy mysteries with magic spark, and I’ve a romantic suspense in the works. My over-active imagination has always worked over time.  I wrote my first vampire romance as a tween, to the chagrin of my mother and the delight of my friends. Colorado is home, I share with my husband of many moons, a brilliant Chow Chow, a spoiled parrot and a forty-two year-old box turtle.  Any winter evening, you can find me curled up in front of a crackling fire with a good book, a mug of hot chocolate and a big bowl of popcorn. During the summer, we camp a lot, where I curl up close to the campfire with a good book, after a long day of hiking or kayaking.
