Thankful Author 2018- SM Spencer

What I'm Thankful For...

I’ve been asked to write a post on what I’m thankful for, and you know what, it’s really hard! And the reason I’m finding it so hard is because there really isn’t much that I’m NOT thankful for. I mean, it would be nice to be ten years younger, and ten pounds lighter, but seriously, I can’t complain about much of anything, which translates to the fact that I’m pretty thankful for all my life circumstances. I’ve got wonderful friends and family, live in an idyllic part of the world, have my horses and cats and even a dog, and I have time to write! But perhaps that is the area where one thing stands out that I am thankful for—one thing that I’d never expected to find—the wide world of other authors.

When I first started writing I thought of it as this solitary task, where one was meant to hide away in a secret workspace, guarding their work until it was finished and even then be somewhat reluctant to show it to anyone. I got started anyway, but I soon found it was kind of scary, not knowing anything about the process—how to improve, how to proceed.

But then I went online. And to be honest, I’m not even sure how I first stumbled upon groups because none of my friends were writers, but somehow I starting finding groups of like-minded people on Facebook, and joined my local branch of Romance Writers of Australia, and bam ...  much to my surprise, there are huge communities of us, all going through the same experiences!

Having the companionship of other authors, most of whom I will never meet face to face, has been an extraordinary journey. I’ve never in my life found so many helpful people, and in turn it’s made me want to help others. Call it win-win, or paying it forward, or whatever else you like, there are incredible communities out there, both in the world of indie-authors, and romance-authors, and I’m sure there’d be other genre-specific communities as well. I am thankful, indeed, to have found my way into some of them.

So, there we are—something I’m incredibly thankful for that I’d never expected to find.

BLURB
With a double wedding and Christmas fast approaching, love is in the air—or is it?

Of course Debra Franklin is looking forward to her best friend’s wedding; she just wishes she wasn’t dateless again, because even though she’s made plans to leave the small-town gossips behind, she knows the wedding photos with her looking like a spinster will last forever. But when the tall-dark-and-handsome Jim Mitchell, with his cobalt blue eyes shadowed by an American cowboy hat, appears on the scene just a week before the wedding she reckons her problem of being dateless might just be solved.

Megan Saunders has always wanted a White Christmas, and this year she’s having one—in Canada. But getting her wish is a double-edged sword as it means having less time with her best friend, Porter Murray, before he leaves for university. She’s getting her childhood wish fulfilled, so why does her future feel as bleak as a dusty road leading nowhere?

As Debra’s and Jim’s paths cross with the teenagers, they form unusual friendships—and their lives are changed in surprising ways.

This is the fifth book in the Copperhead Creek Australian Romance series, set in the small town of Willows, where lives overlap and tangle.

  1. I wholeheartedly agree, SM. The relationships and friendships developed between other authors offer us a listening ear, help keep the spark of creativity flowing, and much needed support.

  4. I couldn't agree with you more. This year I was lucky enough to attend RWA National Conference. I met so many people face to face I'd only talked to online. What a fun exciting time I had.
